Lot 1
1816 N-1 R4 PCGS AU Details Tooled. Attractive frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with a wisp of slightly darker olive brown toning from the nose down to star 2. The eye appeal of this cent is excellent but a glass reveals traces of extremely fine roughness on both sides, strongest around star 7. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a couple dull, faint scratches in the field before the portrait (these may be the cause of the "Tooled" assessment). Rare E-MDS with a single rim cud break over star 10. A few examples are know without any cuds but most of this variety have a series of rim cud breaks from star 8 down to star 11. Graded net VF30 in the Noyes census, his photo #35644. Our grade is EF40+ sharpness net VF30. A decent example of this tough die variety that is tied for tenth finest known in the Noyes census. The attribution and Twin Leaf Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

E-MDS with the usual rim cud breaks from star 8 down to star 11 but before the additional smaller rim cud between stars 11 & 12. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents discovered shortly following the end of the US Civil War. Our grade is MS60. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

1816 N-3 R4 EF45. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with a small spot of darker olive brown toning at the right top of the F in OF (which can help identify this cent). None of these marks is significant and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. MDS with narrow rim cud breaks from star 8 down to star 11. 1817 N-4 R3+ PCGS graded AU53. Steel brown and olive. Frost covers the protected areas and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. However a strong glass reveals traces of extremely faint roughness in the fields and protected areas (the roughness so minor that PCGS elected to ignore it). Just a few trivial marks including a shallow planchet flake in the field before the lips (as struck) and a small pit at a dentil tip under the right foot of the first 1 in the date. MDS with a die crack through the date extending well beyond both sides of the date, and there is a radial die crack branching down to the dentils under the right side of star 1. What might look like a small cud break in the dentils at star 1 is a minor planchet lamination that folded over. Quite deceptive. Our grade is net VF35+. Noyes photo #33344. The only marks are a few tiny ticks on the tip of the bust and a very small planchet lamination void on the rim just right of the second S in STATES (as struck). The toning is a bit dark but the luster is consistent with what you expect to see on a nice mint state coin. LDS with a full "Mouse" break reaching up to the left from the top of the head under star 8. This is the so-called "Finger Mouse" since it is shaped more like a finger than a rodent, but the rodent name sticks since it is located in the same place as the other "Mouse" breaks seen on 1817 cents. 1818 N-2 R4 PCGS AU Details Devices Engraved. Very attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The only defects are a half dozen extremely faint pin scratches that someone added to the brow lock to recreate hair strands in an area that never shows those fine details. Fortunately those added lines are visible only with the aid of a strong glass. Nicely struck EDS. The die crack through the top of UNITED ST is light and the extension to the rim from the T in UNITED is faint. The obverse is uncracked. A beautiful if imperfect example of this scarce die variety. Our grade is net VF35. Noyes graded EF40 sharpness net VF30, his photo #20749. The attribution and Twin Leaf Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $1,250 - UP

The spike up from the tip of the coronet is sharp and the repunching on the base of the second A in AMERICA is clear. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the portrait. M-LDS with the usual die crack that meanders through much of the legend outside the wreath. In addition there are dull but clearly visible lapping lines through CA in AMERICA.
